Your Questions, Part 3: On Blogging and Photography

How did you get started with photography? -Heather
When Cullen was 4 weeks old, he smiled for the first time and my camera wasn't fast enough to catch it. I called my mom all kinds of sad that I missed that moment and had therefore failed as a parent. She assured me that there would be lots more smiles and then bought me my Nikon D3000 for Christmas that year. Thus began my love affair with the camera.
Baby Cullen's first smile that I did catch
When Kev retires, will you become a full-time photographer? -Jenn
No, I will become a full time vacationer/grandchild visitor. Those are my goals for our future, I'm easy.

Give us some photography tips for Pete's sake, yours are just so gorgeous! -Marie
Having a ridiculously good looking husband and childen definitely make taking pretty pictures a lot easier, however, I have learned a lot since I first got my camera. Practice, read, edit, practice, read more, turn off your flash, practice, edit, stop edditing so much, take aclass, move to a place that looks like a post card, practice and read some more.

I always have my camera with me and can easily shoot 50 pictures a day, so what you see on here is a very small fraction of the pictures I actually take.
This is an uneditted picture of Cullen being a dinosaur. I really try not to overedit. I only just picasa and make very few changes, such as straightening or cropping or adding a little fill light. I never use effects on the eyes or over color-boost a picture to the point where it doesn't reflect what I am seeing with my eye. I think the boys are just used to having the camera around, so it is pretty easy to catch them being cute. I am hoping to learn more by taking pictures of other people, like I did for my sister in law a while back.

How many blogs do you follow? And how do you keep up on them while still fulfilling all your SAHM duties? -Emmy June, Born in May
I have no idea. A lot. I allow myself  naptime to read and comment on blogs/respond to emails. I use my google reader and just scroll down my list until I get to a point where they aren't new. I don't comment on everyone's blog everyday, but I to as often as possible. I only email back about a comment if I have something to say, I rarely just through out the 'thanks!' and that is it. I prefer to go back and comment on your blog. One of my biggest pet peeves is when I comment on someone's blog several times and they never visit me back, so I try to alway comment if you have taken the time to give me some love.  There are certainly times when I get behind and I've finally had to just empty my inbox and start fresh. I have to remember that I blog for fun and it shouldn't overwhelm me. I'm never on the computer when I'm home alone with the boys and they are awake, I just don't think that is fair to them. I get my posts made for the day at night while Kev is studying. It is definitely a time consuming hobby, but I love blogging so much and letting you all be a part of our world. I have met some really amazing 'friends' through the blogging community and you all are some of the most supportive readers ever. So thank you for making it such a wonderful experience!

But how about some pics of you? submitted by Jen at Oh, Sunny Day
I know, I'm so bad about getting in the picture.

Here I am torturing Bennett by not letting him eat a lollipop:
And pretending to be a seagull:

When will you ever get stationed at the same post as us? I'd like to be neighbors as soon as possible so that when the witching hour strikes, we can toss the kids in the (fenced-in) backyard, grab a lawn chair and raise a glass. - Jenn
Since Jenn asked this question, we have emailed several times about the genius of sister-wives, minus the husband sharing. But someone to split the child wrangling, cooking and cleaning with? Don't mind if I do. Jenn, I will call Kev's branch manager today and inform him that we need to coordinate with Steve's. I'm sure they will be overwhelmingly cooperative.

Hope y'all enjoy this little Q and A segment, thanks for all the questions!
Please take the time to visit some of the lovely ladies who asked them:

PS- I'll be back this afternoon with a guest post from Nicole Marie. We did a little swap about our love our photography, so be sure to check back!

Yes I agree that a good way to learn is to take a million pictures. I do plan on attending a class at my local rec. center soon, just need to budget it. I shoot in manual now and with natural light and I love the look of it. I don't have an editing system or know how, but hopefully soon, maybe after taking the class.

Omg you crack me up!!! And the photo of Bennett without the lollipop- you are such a CRUEL mommy! ;) Tell him that when we become sister-wives, I will give that sweet thing a lollipop or ten. I'm sure that smile will win me over quickly.

That photo of Bennett just begs for a caption contest.

(the first being "This is how I feel when someone tells me we're out of wine.")

Learning how to take better pictures is on my summer "to-do" list. I post-it-noted it to my fridge. That means I'm really going to do it this year. Like I was supposed to last year...
Have a wonderful weekend, Kate!

I like your advice about moving somewhere that looks like a postcard haha. Monterey is pretty gorgeous. In fact, it's getting a little mention in my travel post about day trips tomorrow! :)
