A while back, we decided it was time to simplify things in the house. The boys had their own rooms, plus a play area in out den, plus the play area in the basement-basement and it really got to the point that was just too much space (and mess) for us (me) to handle. So we started by creating a space for the toys and art supplies for the boys to call their own. We cleaned out each bucket and shelf along the way and really parred down to just the toys they play with.
We brought the futon up from the basement for extra room for guests and hung my Opa's old map on the wall. Daily, the boys trace their finger from our house to Daddy's 'house'. Best of all, this room has a door, so even though we clean up every night, I have the option of just closing it up and not seeing the mess (I can also contain Wells in there if they are all playing, which is nice too).
Meanwhile, we moved the full guest room to upstairs. I decorated it with stuff I had on hand since we never really got around to setting it up nicely in the basement. It is not ideal but for $0, it looks pretty welcoming, right?
Cullen's clothes are still in this dresser and Bennett still uses the closet in this room, but it is adjacent to their newly shared room, so not a big deal.
And now the biggest change: the boys' room.
Again, I didn't want to spend a huge amount of money on this, so most of the stuff we already had. Their beds match, but I had painted C's years ago and decided to keep B's wood. I kind of like that they coordinate but still give them their 'own' look. We were going to do a general sports them, but then I realized how much Auburn stuff I had laying around, so Auburn themed it went.
I did buy them new sheets, but with dorm room stuff on sale right now, I think I paid $20 a piece for their bedding. Tip: I use the top sheet as a bedskirt.
The curtains were moved over from Bennett's old room, the frame above Cullen's bed is the SI cover from last year's Iron Bowl, I bought the art above B's bed from Homegoods, the bench in the middle was an ottoman I threw my AU blanket over (they call it their couch) and the other artwork on B's side we already had, as well as the puff ball thing in the middle and Cullen's rug.
On the other side of the room we have the Auburn creed that a friend painted for me back in '04, picture frames my friend Monica bought C when he was a baby (with updated pictures finally!), my shaker from college (don't worry, it doesn't smell like whisky anymore) and a few of their special knicknacks.
And then in the closet, one simple toy shelf and a book shelf.
And finally, the pile o' stuff waiting to head to Goodwill in my living room. It feels good to simplify!

It all looks so great! Great job! How are they liking sleeping together?
Way to go! You are a guru at decorating on a budget. I have some great memories of sharing a room with my sister. I'm sure your boys are already working on some!
TOP SHEET AS BED SKIRT!!? You just blew my mind, lady!
Looks good. Really good. We have to work on "containing" play spaces as well.
GREAT job! I need to do so much updating/pairing down in our house. Especially, when it comes to toys.
Looks great! Simplifying is always a plus.
I love simplifying! It always feels so much better. We just got rid of 2 trash bags full and a box full of stuff.
I love to purge and I am looking forward to doing this soon! We have to pare down before putting the house on the market in the beginning of September! EEeeekkk -- it's coming soon! Love your make-over! :)
It all looks great! I love the guest room yellow!!!
love this! It's hard to purge when the little person is watching you and saying, don't get rid of that! But slowly while he naps, I'm trying to pair down, toys are taking over and Mini Fox hasn't even begun to add toys to the mix yet!
oh and the flat sheet as a bed skirt, genius!
They all look awesome! :)
LOVE the guest room - so bright, cheery, and inviting! And the boys room came out so cute. Great tip about using the top sheet for a bedskirt. I don't use top sheets for the girls either :)
Looks great!! I really need to purge more things here, it so easily piles up!
You've been a busy busy lady!!!! The house looks great and the guest bedroom looks totally shabby. I really like it!!! Doesn't it feel great to weed out the old stuff you don't use or need any more. It makes me feel so much better and best part is your helping someone at the same time!!
Love it!! (Well as usual except for the Auburn part) ;)
I love to organize and purge!
Everything looks great! Where did you get the puff things in the playroom? Did you make them? Also, I love Cullen posing in the guest room pictures! Too cute!
What awesome rooms. They look like they should be in Better Homes and Gardens, and yet, they're functional! I've started cleaning out the clutter from our house too, but right now our home doesn't look much different. I still have a lot more work to be done!
They look great! I love when you can pull things together that you already have to make a new, fun space.
Awesome! You are so good at using stuff you already have! And the sheet as a bedskirt - what a novel idea!
