So remember last month when I set some goals for October?
It turns out that I am not so good at completing goals.
Here's how I did:
1. Walk for 30 minutes a day, at least 4 times a week.
I think I even used the phrase "no excuses not do this" with great confidence that I would come out of the end of the month half-way fit and in shape-ish. Well, the first week went great, then...ummm...turns out I have a lot of excuses.
For example:
The federal parks are closed and I like to walk by the river
It's raining
The bricks in Old Town are too bumpy
I need a nap
But it is 30 whole minutes that I could be getting other things done
I like getting dressed in the morning, not like putting on yoga pants and sneakers.
Last night, Kev and I were talking about this and how I have such a hard time prioritizing working out because it is not something I really enjoy. Sure, I feel good afterwards, but I don't look forward to doing it. His suggestion was for me to work out at night after the boys go to bed. I pointed to the giant glass of wine I just poured after the boys went to bed (giant, because I was feeling too lazy to walk back up the 6 steps to pour more and it was more efficient to fill it up the first time). Clearly, night exercise is not going to happen.
2. Read at least two books.
Good news, this one did happen, just by a hair as I finished my second book last week. I read Dan Brown's Inferno (while I appreciate the amount of research that needs to go into his books, I am admittedly tired of the Robert Langdon character. I mean, how many times can a Harvard professor get in life or death situations?) and Veronica Roth's Allegiant (Didn't like it as much as the first two, it was kind of all over the place with plot points and random characters who would pop up few a minutes but really serve no purpose. Still an interesting premise though).
3. Book 4 photography jobs.
I did 0 in October, but have 6 coming up, does that count?
And it is not too late for you, so email me if you want more info.
4. Finish our Year 6 Photo Book.
So this is annoying... I went through a year's worth of file folders and uploaded 500 hundred pictures, then sat down last Friday night to get this done. I did 30 pages and clicked on the button to 'add more' and realized I had selected the wrong type of book and this particular one capped out at 30. I was only halfway through the year and there is no way to transfer all the pages done to a new book. Grrrr. I know I can sit down and get this done, but I am not done being annoyed at myself yet.
5. Turn 30.
Check.
6. Finish Wells' Nursery.
Again, SO close, but not done. There is one more project I need to complete and like any of the problem above, time is an issue. I just rarely have a large chunk of time to sit down and complete something and because this involves painting, I need it to be uninterrupted. I am hoping to have this ready by next week because everything else is so cute and it is really turning into such a unique and special room.

My excuse for not really working out is that I'm nursing and if I work out too hard without eating right and re-hydrating enough my supply will go down. haha I'm so lazy when it actually comes to working out. I love going outside and walking or running around with Em though.
Also, I need wine.
Yeah I found in the summer I said it was too hot to walk and now I say it's too cold! I'm impressed you get to read... That's not happening over here!
I haven't done great with goals this month either :(
That giant glass of wine is what I'm talking about! :)
I think you are doing great, even if you didn't actually complete all of your goals. Like you said, raising your kids and being a family is truly the most important thing. I've really been struggling with the workout stuff, too, since in order to be in the shape I want and at the weight I want, I need to run or do other fairly intense types of exercise, which I haven't felt motivated to do, especially since it's getting colder and dark earlier.
I walk at the gym, which is super lame, but, BUT, childcare and HGTV on the treadmill's tv screen.
I felt the same way about Allegiant. Maybe she just wanted to hit her deadline and call it a wrap? Letdown for sure.
That glass of wine right there? That's how I know, once again, that our friendship was written in the stars.
That and the fact that we have similar feelings about working out (though B keeps telling me he's going to get me liking exercise... Nice try, Army Man... Can you please hand me my glass?)
I have all of these great goals and intentions, but like you said, time is a major factor! I try to remember these years go by so quickly and in a couple years I'll probably complain I have too much free time while they're both in school.
I love this post for so many reasons. Maybe I should just write a post with subject Ditto and a link to yours :)
Hey Kate - I sent you an email last week about utilizing your photography skills...I am not sure if you got it. Is there another email address you use? Thanks!
Karen
As long as you are trying that's all that matters. :)
Hey, you got some accomplished... That is better than nothing at all!! And I am right there with you on the exercising... Would MUCH rather drink! ;) haha! Cheers to that!
I'm having trouble with the gym lately for more than one reason. The biggest is that I don't enjoy it the way I did a year ago. If I don't enjoy it, I'm not going to do it. End of story.
I don't even set goals. You were brave to publish them in the first place :)
I always get laughed at about the amount of started "projects" wind up in our garage waiting to be finished. And they aren't small ones either. Maybe we'll park a car in the garage at our next house....
Well, does it not require "exercise" to lift a glass of wine to your lips over and over????
Yes, I always have a "reason" not to do my daily walking...although, the weather yesterday was so beautiful and I had worked so hard on my computer all day, that I could not resist taking a walk.
Most importantly, you are being a wonderful mom and wife...all the other stuff will happen in its own good time.
Miss you!!! Wish you were not so far away, then we could do our best to inspire each other to walk by walking together.
Love ya!!!
You did way more than I accomplished the last two months. I can barely keep my house in order much less work out or read a book. I desperately miss reading.
Now THAT'S my kind of a glass of wine!!!! My son's nursery is still not complete...I keep saying, I'll get on it, but I have 2nd baby syndrome. I enjoy working out, and it's stress reliever, so I can't give ya any advice there! And I am LOVING the fall photos in your last post.
You are already overachieving! My goals with 3 young boys would be survive and sleep. I'm not even sure I'll properly decorate a nursery for my #2.
Working out after the kids go to bed is like the worst idea ever! It's totally time for wine at that point:)
Cut yourself some slack! It's really hard reaching goals when you have three human beings counting on you for everything! You did great. By the way, I started Inferno when I was pregnant with Liam and have yet to make it through chapter two!
And this is why I don't make lists for myself, hehe. I was the same way about working out until one day it just clicked again and I started loving it. However, I don't think I would love it if I had three rugrats to take care of...good luck!
