Ever since I discovered the library here, I have been reading like crazy (why didn't I go to the library in North Carolina? Literally, the thought never occurred to me. For shame).
Here is what I read last month:
1. City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare. This was the 4th book in the Mortal Instruments series and y'all, it is terrible. I felt like I read the same awful book four times in a row and yet, I couldn't.put.it.down. I know, I'm embarrassed too. If you like a really uncomfortable romance, vampires, faeries, angels, werewolves, alternate worlds, portals, demons and the lack of mention that the kids should be in school because they are 16, then this is for you. If you want a book that you can read in a day and not have to think at all, go check out all four. :)
2. The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender. This was the story of a nine year old girl who takes a bite of a lemon cake that her mother made and can feel every emotion in it. The book follows her through childhood and early adulthood as she manages being able to taste what everyone is feeling. I loved it.
3. Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. I had heard from so many people that this book was amazing, but honestly, I didn't love it. I think seeing the movie trailers really threw me off because in my mind, the character Reese Witherspoon plays should have been much, much younger. I like the historical side of the story (which was about circus trains) but just didn't care for the plot. We also watched the movie last week and I think if I hadn't read the book, I would have enjoyed the movie more, but the parts of the book the movie left out, I thought were the better parts (does that even make sense?). All I could think during the movie was O please, please, don't ruin The Hunger Games, just stick to the story. Come on, you know you are thinking about that movie too.
4. Paradise Prophecy by Robert Browne. This book was like The Davinci Code on crack. Replace Robert Landgon with a washed-up, alcoholic, clairvoyant professor, add some spontaneous combustion and fallen/demonic angels, plus the angel Michael, and you get a fast passed thrilled, based on the last chapter of Milton's Paradise Lost. This book is definitely outrageous and over the top, but it held my attention for a few days.
On the bed side table right now:
Lunch in Paris by Elizabeth Bard
Juliet by Anne Fortier

Have you read any of the books above? Any suggestions on what I should check out next?

Im not a big book reader, Ive always wanted to get in to it but just never have. Maybe I'll check out one of your recent reads and see how that goes.
I am in love with the library! Have you read the Hunger Games trilogy? It's a must!

Hi, i love reading too..:) Thanks for sharing..:) I usually go with Reader's Digest,I love reading stories about life and advice about living.:) Thanks a lot kate! :)
I loved Water for Elephants! I just got the Kindle Fire for Christmas and I can't wait to try out some of your recommendations! xx
I'm a huge reader but can't find a great book to get my out of my slump. We go to the library weekly with our daughter-she loves it! I am going to try the lemon cake book and paris lunch! Thanks for the recommendations-wish I had some for you!
I've been working on a review of what I have read so far...I want to try the lemoncake book! My mom read it and said it was so good, too. xoxo, e
After hearing so much about Hunger Games I think I will have to give those a try. Your picks sound good as well Kate!
Oh girl, I wish I read books more. I mean, I can recommend "Go, Go, Go" for Bennett. It's all of 6 pages about a little red car that just... GOES! Engrossing! Page-turner! You will not be able to put this one down (because your child will just keep shoving it in your face)! ;)
Other than the kids' books, I try to keep up with a few magazines. Ugh. I'm a loser. Will try to get to the library soon! You are inspiring!
After the disaster that became the Twilight movies (those books had potential!), I've literally been praying that screenplay does not completely ruin The Hunger Games. I think Jennifer Lawrence will do a good job though as Katniss. Kristen Stewart never stood a chance ha ha.
I use to read too much, however now, with so much to do, I don't have the time. Trying to make time for my little pleasures again. Luv
I haven't read any of these and have been so swamped with class readings and assignments that reading for pleasure has fallen by the wayside a bit recently. Still, I'm looking forward to getting back on track and actually have a post planned for this afternoon listing some of the books I'm in the middle of and hoping to get to soon.
I haven't read any of those books, but I saw the movie version of Water for Elephants and thought it decent.
Reading a bad book is the worst, but then it's fun to move on and open up a new adventure.
I am so looking forward to the Hunger Games. Watching the trailer is so great because it's exactly as I pictured it in my mind.
I just read the first Hunger Games on my trip so I guess I'm moving onto the second one now. Thanks for commenting about my job loss. I am really enjoying being with the kids!
I just reread William Deresciewiz's A Jane Austen Education, and loved it as much if not more the second time. I don't often re-read books.
Have you read Like Water for Chocolate? It's amazing! Your description of The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake reminded me of it.
You should look into getting a Goodreads account. They're free and helps me keep track of the books I've read and want to read. I also lets you set goals, and I use it nearly everyday. Haha.
only #3 have i read and the others ive never heard of em!
