Guest Post: Homemade Air Fresheners

Hi all, I am happy to be guest posting today for Kate while she is entertaining her parents. From her photos, it looks like they are having a great time, and her children are enjoying some quality time with their grandparents. Seeing images like that makes my heart happy!

Kate asked me to do a DIY craft and I was racking my brain of what to do. I have plenty of cookie cutters so I got to thinking what I could do. One of the things I love most about this holiday season is all the wonderful scents and smells. Like cookies baking in the oven, a real Christmas tree recently put up in my house, and those oh-so wonderful cinnamon scented pine cones. Do you know the ones I am talking about? Yummy! If not, pop by your local craft store, I'm sure they have them. 

Ok so what does smells and cookie cutters have to do with each other? I have for you all today, homemade air freshener. And the even better part, they cost less than $3 to make. Way cheaper than any candle or air freshener you would find in the store!

For this super easy and cheap DIY, you need equal parts cinnamon and applesauce. When I went to the store to buy this, a can of applesauce, yes a can, not a jar was only 99 cents and two packages of cinnamon was 89 cents each. Using store bought applesauce is preferred for this craft.

You can also add in a bit of ground cloves and ginger but you don't have to if you don't want to buy or have it handy in your spice rack.

In a bowl, combine 1/2 cup cinnamon and 1/2 cup applesauce.

Then stir, stir all the ingredients together. It won't from an actual dough but it will come together.

Then you will roll out the "dough", I stuck it between two sheets of waxed paper because it is rather sticky and my rolling pin won't be all cinnamoned up! Yup Just turned a noun into a verb :-)

Once the "dough" is rolled out, cut the dough using whatever cookie cutters you have, I used Halloween shapes like a ghost, a moon, a cat and a grave marker.

With a straw, poke a hole near the top of each of your cookie shapes, so you can put some ribbon or thread through the hole after it is dried to hang out.

Set your cookie air freshener aside to dry for 12-24 hours. Once they are dried, use ribbon or thread through the hole to hang up.

I hung mine up in various places around the house and already I can smell the cinnamon and clove, yum!
